Future Designers Highlighted At Academy of Art University NYFW Shows

New York Fashion Week has always been a time when new and unique trends get their global start and where designers can make or break a career. This is especially true when it comes to younger designers who may be just breaking into the industry with one of their first shows at the event. Having said that, it’s also been one of the most effective ways of finding innovative talent for many of the largest fashion companies in the world. As such, the School of Fashion at the Academy of Art University has thrown a showcase during the event for over two decades.

Now celebrating its 21st year at the New York Fashion Week, the School of Fashion has unveiled some of its most noteworthy designers yet. With this, ten recent BFA and MFA graduates were able to show off their own menswear and womenswear collections; chief among these were five different womenswear collections, two collaborations and two menswear ranges. The diverse range of looks was further highlighted by the wide range of backgrounds that the designers themselves came from. With that in mind, this year’s designers represented one of the most diverse ranges of creators that the School of Fashion has ever put forth. This included creators from the likes of mainland China to coastal Maine and much more besides.

The recent graduates were able to unveil their collections in front of quite a notable audience, which featured prominent fashion figures such as America’s Next Top Model’s Ms. J Alexander and much more. Perhaps one of the most interesting of the fashion graduates was Hallun Zhau, who was an MFA graduate in Fashion Design and was originally from Qing Dao, China. Zhau was inspired by the many photographs she took while traveling. Perhaps most significantly, many of these were taken over a day during her creative concept class. As a result of this, much of her work included the likes of vinyl and PVC, as well as the fusion of different materials throughout the fabric. This laid the basis for the range of outerwear, separates and dresses she unveiled during the showcase.
